Important News for Members!

Please join me in giving a hearty welcome to the wonderful Marinna Cole, who has joined forces with us to help do some development work on the software.  Already she has helped out on some builds, but today she has sent us a bit of coding to add some grid refinements to the crop tool, adding Golden Rectangle and Triangle gridding.  She and Masahiro will massage this and hopefully it will make it into the next iteration.  Thanks, Marinna, our hats off to you!  Great to have you aboard.

Tex Goes on the Road Again

Beginning Friday, May 6, until about Saturday May 28, Tex will be on the road for a trip.  My wife and I are going out to Berkeley, California to see our brilliant daughters graduate from UC Berkeley, one with a Master's in Public Health, the other a Bachelor's degree in French and Art History.  We will drive from our home in Baltimore, on the east coast of the U.S., out and back, camping along the way, doing photography of course, seeing family, and one business stop for my wife.  Many adventures, but they will take us off the grid at times, so expect customer service outages.

More temporary restrictions

For the moment, I've disabled user images/avatars. This is because of security holes in a server-side image-processing program called ImageMagick. No fixes are yet available, and the bad guys are already exploiting the holes.

When things look safe, I'll turn the user images/avatars back on. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Forums temporarily restricted (Update, Sunday, 3 April)

I'm continuing to tinker with keeping spammers from posting links. One did get through for a couple of hours before I caught him, so I tightened the screws a bit more.

The result was a draw. We caught one more spammer, but one of our long-time members was temporarily blocked for having posted a link. I think I've fixed that now. But if you get caught in one of my traps, drop an email to info at lightzoneproject.org and we'll straighten it back out.

Hey, everyone...we've been hit by spammers again

Sorry, all, but today our spam defenses have failed this morning.  We're working on it, but please bear with us today and until we get this straightened out.  Thanks for your patience, and many thanks to Julisa Swan for alerting me.

State of the website

As some of you have noticed, the website has been a bit unstable for the past month. Not to worry, that doesn't mean it's coming apart. On the contrary, we've been bringing it up to date and beefing it up, making it more secure against hackers and such. That work is pretty much done now. And the LightZone software is completely separate from the website so it wasn't affected at all. (Read more below).

CleanTalk anti-spam in use (Update: Read completely if you have been rejected)

Our fight against forum spammers looks to be won. Ever since we switched on CleanTalk last Thursday, not a single spammer has successfully registered. CleanTalk has filtered out about 60 spammers that got past our first- and second-line defenses.

We had some initial problems with overly-aggressive rejection of some legitimate usernames. At our request, CleanTalk has reduced the sensitivity to where all of the ones that were falsely rejected wouldn't have been. (Read on...)

LightZone Reaches 100,000 Registered Members!

I think I speak for Doug, Masahiro, And so many others from the early days of the project when I say that this, to us, is an astonishing milestone.  Certainly Doug and I never dreamed in our wildest fantasies when we started this project that this would happen.  We thank everyone who has helped make this happen (read more by clicking the link below)
